HOVERAir X1 PRO for Skiing, Cycling, and Hiking: Mode-by-Mode Setup

For HOVERAir X1 PRO action tracking, choose Ski Mode for skiing, Cycling Mode for riding, and Follow for ordinary hiking. Then match the camera's position and movement to a clear, recoverable section of your route. Start behind the subject, check a short slow pass, and add more ambitious framing only after you can supervise the flight and retrieve the camera safely.

Prepare the camera before choosing the shot

Connect the X1 PRO to the HOVER X1 app, finish activation if needed, and inspect the battery, propellers, guards and sensors. The official Quick Start Guide explains Bluetooth pairing and mode selection. You can change modes with the aircraft's select buttons and adjust flight parameters through the app. Make those choices while stationary.

Check the firmware actually installed. On September 10, 2026, HOVERAir's release notes list X1 PRO/PROMAX v8.4.15, dated August 6, 2026, with Ski Mode Smart Ascend and Follow stability improvements. The earlier v8.3.9 release added Ski Mode Back/Dolly follow positions and environment options. Older tutorials may therefore show different menus; Side Track is now called Angle Track. Use the update offered for your device and repeat the short route check after updating.

Walk through the planned camera corridor, including the space beside and above you. Identify a launch area, a stopping area and a place you could reach if the aircraft landed early. A trail that accommodates your body or bicycle may still leave insufficient room for the camera.

The safety manual requires an unobstructed operating area and keeping the aircraft in sight. Check local flight restrictions and the land manager's permission before launch. If skiing or riding would prevent you from supervising the camera, change the filming arrangement or skip the shot.

Choose the mode by movement and available space

These are conservative starting choices for planning a shot. They are not tested presets or a promise that the aircraft can negotiate a particular trail.

X1 PRO starting choices for three outdoor activities
ActivityStarting modeFirst decisionReason to cancel
SkiingSki Mode, BackMatch the environment setting to the slope and preserve overhead room.Snowfall, inadequate cold-weather preparation, people entering the corridor or no reachable recovery area.
CyclingCycling Mode, BackChoose Open Areas or Narrow Routes after inspecting the whole camera path.Branches, traffic or bends that hide the camera or subject.
HikingFollowKeep a visible subject and continuous clearance through elevation changes.A wooded pinch point, cliff edge or transition that breaks supervision.
Mode functions: HOVERAir's current Ski and Cycling guides, firmware notes and Quick Start Guide. Starting choices and cancellation criteria are editorial interpretation of those functions and the safety manual.

Skiing: set the path before increasing sensitivity

In the app, select Ski Mode, then choose the available environment option for open or narrow terrain. Start with Back follow position on a clear section, with room for a controlled stop. The current Ski Mode guide describes Dolly Track as a front-facing alternative for slower runs. A different viewing angle requires a fresh clearance check.

  1. Confirm that the OmniTerrain indicator is illuminated before attempting a snow-covered route. The Quick Start Guide advises against poorly textured scenes when it is unlit.
  2. Choose follow height and distance that leave the aircraft a clear corridor throughout the turns. Check the preview while stationary.
  3. Begin with a short, gentle pass. Review whether the camera retains you and whether its lateral movement fits the corridor.
  4. Adjust Follow Sensitivity if needed: High responds more actively to side-to-side movement; Low favors smoother camera movement. Change one parameter, then repeat the same short check.

Check whether Smart Ascend is enabled before launching. HOVERAir describes it as raising the aircraft when it detects people or obstacles. Leave room overhead and keep people out of your planned flight path; the feature does not establish that a crowded slope is suitable.

Snow capability also depends on the actual equipment and conditions. HOVERAir's winter guidance says the X1 PRO is not fully waterproof. The Ski guide's below-zero preparation depends on a specific winter battery configuration. Do not assume the Standard package meets that requirement. If the battery you have lacks verified instructions for the expected temperature, postpone the flight. Avoid snowfall and wet conditions.

Cycling: understand what Narrow Routes changes

In Hover settings, select Cycling Mode, set follow position to Back, then open Cycling Environment. HOVERAir's Cycling Mode instructions make Back a prerequisite for that environment control.

Open Areas lets the aircraft optimize its route. Narrow Routes makes it more closely reproduce the cyclist's trajectory. That distinction matters at bends, but it does not prove that every object above or beside the bicycle will be cleared. Inspect the volume the camera will occupy, rather than judging only the width of the riding surface.

  1. Select the environment, follow height, follow distance and duration before mounting the bike.
  2. Choose a clear stopping area and confirm the configured landing method.
  3. Launch while stationary, confirm tracking, then begin a slow, short pass.
  4. Stop and review framing before trying a faster pass. If the camera cuts across unsuitable space or loses you, shorten or abandon the shot rather than increasing distance to conceal the problem.

The X1 PRO tracking-settings guide explains framing adjustments in more detail. Keep those adjustments separate from route acceptance: a pleasing preview does not establish clearance behind the next bend.

Hiking: use Follow for movement and separate scenic shots

For an ordinary walk, start with Follow, which the Quick Start Guide describes as locking onto the subject and following movement. Choose enough separation to frame your body without sending the camera through vegetation. Stop before a switchback or step change if you cannot see how the aircraft's path will remain clear.

For a brief scenic shot, choose the geometry deliberately. Hover holds position while turning the camera to keep the subject in frame; Zoom Out moves upward and away; Bird's Eye ascends for an overhead view; Orbit circles the subject. Dolly Track places the camera ahead of you, while Angle Track provides an offset view. Each needs clearance along its own flight path.

Land before changing from a walking sequence to an unfamiliar scenic mode. Check the full arc for Orbit, the overhead space for Bird's Eye, and the retreating path for Zoom Out. Keep the shot local enough that the endpoint remains visible and reachable.

HOVERAir's product-page sensing footnote limits X1 PRO rear obstacle detection to Zoom Out, Dolly Track and Dolly Zoom, at speeds up to 1.5 m/s. It is a different function from Ski Mode Smart Ascend. Neither establishes all-direction clearance. Read the X1 PRO obstacle-sensing limits before planning a backward or sideways shot.

Decide how the flight ends before it starts

Practice a normal stop and retrieval in an open area before the activity. The Quick Start Guide describes palm landing with your hand about 20 cm beneath the aircraft; keep fingers outside the guards and wait for the propellers to stop. Check the selected mode's landing behavior so that stopping on the route does not surprise you.

Loss of the subject and loss of the controller connection are different events. The Ski guide describes hovering when visual tracking is lost. The safety manual separately lets you choose Hover or Return to Home for controller disconnection under Manual Control > settings > Operation Settings > Safety Settings. Check the setting; do not assume every interruption brings the camera to your current position.

If tracking breaks, stop safely and locate the aircraft. Use the app's Manual Control only while you have a working connection and can supervise the recovery. Do not keep moving in the hope that it will catch up. The X1 PRO range and tracking-distance explainer clarifies why radio reach and keeping a person in view are separate limits.

Land immediately for a low-battery or strong-wind warning, as the safety manual instructs. Choose a nearer stopping point if the remaining route would make retrieval difficult. Recheck when the terrain, light or wind changes. One successful pass does not establish reliability along the rest of the route.

Choose a shot you can supervise and finish

The X1 PRO's sport modes are useful when you can reserve a clear stretch for a short tracking sequence. Ski Mode adds snow-specific choices, Cycling Mode changes how the aircraft follows a route, and Follow is a straightforward starting point for walking. If the essential shot requires disappearing behind terrain, flying through traffic or relying on automatic obstacle clearance, choose a different shot. Mode selection can shape a flight; it cannot make an unsuitable route workable.
