The DJI Avata 2 weighs approximately 377 g, so it is above the FAA's 250 g recreational registration threshold. In the United States, it must be registered for recreational flight, and every Avata 2 flown under Part 107 must also be registered. Because it is a registered aircraft, Remote ID applies. DJI publishes an approximate Avata 2 takeoff weight of 377 g. That equals about 13.3 oz or 0.831 lb. The FAA requires recreational registration when a drone weighs 250 g, or 0.55 lb, or more. The Avata 2 exceeds that threshold by approximately 127 g, so small measurement differences and an empty microSD slot do not change the answer. The 377 g figure is the aircraft's takeoff weight. Goggles and the hand-held controller are not carried by the aircraft, so their weights are not added to the drone's registration weight. Accessories attached to the aircraft, such as an anti-collision light, protective hardware, or another approved addition, do increase the actual takeoff weight and can affect handling.

Weight settles the registration question, but it does not determine which operating rules apply. The purpose of the flight determines whether the limited recreational exception or Part 107 is the correct path.

Recreational and Part 107 Registration Are Different

An Avata 2 must be registered either way, but the FAA handles recreational and Part 107 inventories differently. Do not register under the recreational exception and then assume that registration covers a business, work, or other non-recreational operation.

Purpose matters more than whether money changes hands. The FAA warns that a flight is not automatically recreational merely because the pilot is unpaid. Decide the operation's purpose before takeoff. If the aircraft is being used to support a business, client, organization, or another non-recreational objective, review the Part 107 path.

Registration is not the end of the process

After registration, place the assigned FAA registration number on the exterior of the aircraft, keep the registration certificate available in paper or digital form, and make sure anyone operating the drone has access to that certificate. Registration does not provide airspace authorization, waive visual-line-of-sight requirements, or authorize flight over people.

Who Needs TRUST for a DJI Avata 2?

Anyone flying the Avata 2 under the limited recreational exception must complete the FAA's Recreational UAS Safety Test, commonly called TRUST, and carry proof of passage while flying. TRUST is free and available online through FAA-approved test administrators. TRUST is not an aircraft registration and does not replace the registration certificate. It is also not a Part 107 remote pilot certificate. These are separate items:
  • TRUST proof shows that a recreational flyer completed the required safety test.
  • FAA registration identifies the aircraft owner and registered inventory.
  • Remote ID information links the broadcasting aircraft or module to the registration record.
  • A Part 107 remote pilot certificate authorizes the certificate holder to serve as remote pilot in command for qualifying Part 107 operations.
A pilot operating strictly under Part 107 follows the Part 107 certification and recurrent-training requirements rather than using TRUST as the authority for that flight. A person may hold both credentials, but the applicable operating rules still depend on the flight's purpose.

DJI Avata 2 Remote ID: Built In, but Registration Still Matters

DJI lists the Avata 2 as supporting FAA Remote ID through built-in functionality. That makes it a Standard Remote ID drone rather than a drone that normally needs a separate broadcast module. DJI says the aircraft begins broadcasting its FAA Remote ID signal when it is in U.S. airspace and the motors are turning. The broadcast can include the drone identifier, aircraft location and altitude, velocity, control-station location and elevation, time mark, and emergency status. Remote ID is a local radio broadcast. DJI states that an Internet or Wi-Fi network connection is not required for the broadcast itself, although current location data and compatible firmware remain important.

How to verify and register the Remote ID path

  1. Update the complete system. Install current aircraft, goggles, controller, and DJI Fly updates before relying on Remote ID behavior.
  2. Find the Remote ID serial. Use the aircraft label, DJI software, goggles, or controller information identified by DJI. Do not substitute the FAA registration number.
  3. Check the FAA Declaration of Compliance database. Search for the exact DJI model and confirm the aircraft or serial format is covered by an FAA-accepted Standard Remote ID declaration.
  4. Use the correct DroneZone device type. Add the Avata 2 as a Standard Remote ID drone, not as a separate Remote ID broadcast module.
  5. Enter the Remote ID serial carefully. A correct aircraft registration number paired with the wrong Remote ID serial produces an incorrect inventory record.
  6. Complete the physical and document steps. Mark the aircraft with the FAA registration number and carry the registration certificate.
  7. Check for warnings before takeoff. Do not ignore an app or goggles alert that indicates Remote ID is unavailable or malfunctioning.
The FAA instructs recreational flyers to add each Standard Remote ID drone to their device inventory. Part 107 operators register each device individually. If an existing registration record was created with the wrong Remote ID answer or serial, use the FAA's current edit or replacement process rather than assuming the broadcast alone fixes the registry.
If Remote ID fails in flight DJI states that the system monitors Remote ID from preflight through shutdown and displays an alert for a malfunction. The operator should land as soon as practicable if the aircraft is no longer broadcasting as required.
Remote ID does not create flight permission. It does not replace an airspace authorization, TRUST, a Part 107 certificate, visual line of sight, or permission from the property owner at the takeoff and landing site.

Why Avata 2 Goggles Flight Needs a Visual Observer

The Avata 2 is designed around compatible goggles, and DJI states that the aircraft cannot be operated without them. The goggles provide an immersive camera view but block the pilot's unaided view of the physical aircraft and surrounding airspace. That creates the central regulatory issue for solo FPV flight.

Recreational operations

The limited recreational exception requires the aircraft to remain within the visual line of sight of the person operating it or a visual observer who is co-located with and in direct communication with the operator. For normal immersive Avata 2 use, plan on a second person standing with the pilot and continuously watching the aircraft.

Part 107 operations

14 C.F.R. § 107.31 requires the aircraft to be seen throughout the flight with unaided vision other than corrective lenses so the crew can know its location, attitude, altitude, and direction, scan for other air traffic or hazards, and determine that it does not endanger people or property. The required ability must be exercised by the pilot and person manipulating the controls or by a visual observer. When a visual observer is used under Part 107, § 107.33 requires effective communication with the remote pilot in command and person manipulating the controls. The crew must coordinate to scan for collision hazards and maintain awareness of the aircraft's position through direct visual observation.

A visual observer does not turn a long-range O4 link into permission for long-range flight. The observer must actually maintain the required view. Relaying the aircraft from one distant spotter to another is not the co-located recreational model and does not create ordinary Part 107 BVLOS authority.

A Practical Avata 2 Visual-Observer Briefing

The FAA defines the responsibilities, but the crew still needs a usable communication plan. Before the pilot puts on the goggles, agree on the operating area, maximum distance and altitude, return path, landing area, nearby airspace, people and property boundaries, and the words that require immediate pilot action.

Brief these calls before takeoff

  • Traffic: State the crewed aircraft's clock direction, apparent movement, and urgency. The drone yields to other aircraft.
  • Lost sight: The observer can no longer see the Avata 2. The pilot should stop the planned maneuver and recover the required visual condition or land.
  • Boundary: The aircraft is nearing the agreed edge of the operating area, property line, people, road, or another ground hazard.
  • Obstacle: Identify the hazard and direction using words the pilot can translate from the goggles view.
  • Stop, hover, return, or land: Define which call is mandatory and what response confirms that the pilot heard it.
  • Link or battery: Announce a warning that changes the return plan before it becomes an emergency.
Test communication before arming. The observer should know how the aircraft looks in Normal, Sport, and Manual flight, but should not be expected to judge a difficult maneuver from outside without a briefing. If the observer loses sight, communication fails, or a crewed aircraft approaches, the plan should favor a predictable, conservative recovery rather than finishing the shot.
