Those numbers are accurate manufacturer maximums, but several need context before they can guide a purchase or flight plan.
Quick answer: Avata 2 is built for fast, immersive, stabilized FPV video rather than conventional aerial photography. Its camera and storage are strong for a compact cinewhoop, but it has only a single-axis mechanical gimbal, JPEG-only stills, no obstacle avoidance, and a 13 km transmission claim that is neither a guaranteed real-world range nor permission to fly beyond visual line of sight.

The table reveals the aircraft's actual identity. Avata 2 is heavier and much faster than a sub-250 g folding camera drone, while its protected propellers, wide camera, goggles-first operation, and electronic stabilization distinguish it from an open-prop freestyle quad.
Camera specs: strong video, limited still photography
Avata 2 uses a 1/1.3-inch image sensor with 12 effective megapixels. The fixed f/2.8 lens has a 155° maximum field of view, a 12 mm full-frame-equivalent perspective, and a focus range from 0.6 m to infinity. That combination favors close passes, low-altitude lines, interiors, and a strong sensation of speed.
The sensor is notably larger than the sensors found in many small FPV action-camera systems, but the camera is still designed around motion. Stills are limited to single-shot JPEG files at up to 4000 × 3000 in 4:3 or 4000 × 2256 in 16:9. There is no RAW photo format listed, no optical zoom, and no multi-camera focal-length choice.

Which recording mode is most useful?
4K/60 in 4:3 is the flexible choice for pilots who expect to crop the same flight for horizontal and vertical delivery. The taller frame retains more image above and below the centerline. 4K/100 in 16:9 is the headline slow-motion option when smooth playback matters more than reframing room. Standard 4K/30 or 4K/60 in 16:9 is the simpler choice for footage intended to remain widescreen.
Avata 2 records MP4 files in H.264 or H.265 at up to 130 Mbps. Standard color is ready for a quicker edit, while 10-bit D-Log M retains more grading flexibility. D-Log M is useful only if the editor plans to correct and grade the footage; it is not automatically a better-looking finished file.
Single-axis gimbal and electronic stabilization explained
The camera has a mechanical gimbal only on the tilt axis. Its controllable range is -85° to 80°, while the wider mechanical range is -95° to 90°. This lets the pilot aim the camera up or down, but it is not the three-axis gimbal used by conventional DJI camera drones.
Roll stabilization comes primarily from electronic processing. RockSteady 3.0+ smooths vibration and motion while retaining more of the aircraft's banked FPV character. HorizonSteady prioritizes a level horizon. Both modes crop and process the image to create stable footage, so the resulting look depends on the field-of-view and stabilization settings rather than the sensor specification alone.
DJI also permits electronic stabilization to be turned off. When EIS is disabled and the camera is set to Wide, the footage supports offline stabilization in Gyroflow. That route gives an editor more control over the final stabilization, but it adds a post-production step and requires the original unstabilized file.
Buyer consequence: Avata 2 can produce polished, level footage, but it does so differently from a Mini-series camera drone. If the goal is slow, tripod-like aerial photography, a three-axis gimbal is the better tool. If the goal is low, fast, close, immersive movement, Avata 2's system is the more relevant design.
How fast is DJI Avata 2?
DJI publishes three different horizontal speed limits because Avata 2 changes substantially with its flight mode. The widely repeated 60 mph figure applies only to Manual mode. A pilot using the included motion controller normally operates in the slower assisted modes unless a compatible DJI FPV Remote Controller is added and Manual mode is configured.

Maximum ascent and descent speed is 6 m/s in Normal mode and 9 m/s in Sport mode. DJI also rates wind resistance at 10.7 m/s, or about 23.9 mph. Wind resistance is not a recommended wind limit: a 10.7 m/s headwind approaches or exceeds Normal mode's published horizontal speed, leaving little return margin.
The listed 5,000 m maximum takeoff altitude describes the elevation at which DJI tested takeoff capability. It does not mean the aircraft may climb 5,000 m above the launch point, and it does not override local altitude or airspace rules.
Flight time is rated at about 23 minutes, but DJI's test runs from full charge to battery depletion under controlled conditions. The separate DJI Avata 2 battery guide uses reserve-based arithmetic to explain why 16 to 18 minutes per healthy pack is a more useful planning range.
DJI Avata 2 range: three different numbers
Range can refer to the O4 video link, the distance the aircraft can physically fly on one battery, or the distance a pilot may legally and safely operate. DJI lists 13 km for both maximum FCC transmission distance and maximum flight distance, but the matching numbers describe different tests.

The O4 link uses four antennas in a 2T4R arrangement, supports up to 60 MHz communication bandwidth, and sends a live view at up to 1080p/100 fps. With DJI Goggles 3, DJI lists latency as low as 24 ms at 1080p/100 and 40 ms at 1080p/60. These are minimum laboratory-style transmission figures, not fixed latency in every environment.
Why 13 km is not a flight plan
A safe flight must preserve battery for the return, landing, wind, and unexpected delays. Radio range does not guarantee battery range, and neither guarantees a clear route. Buildings, terrain, foliage, radio congestion, antenna orientation, and the pilot's body can weaken the link long before the published maximum.
Rules also remain separate from technical capability. In the United States, the FAA requires recreational pilots to keep the drone within visual line of sight or use a co-located visual observer in direct communication. For Part 107 operations using FPV technology, the FAA says a visual observer must keep the aircraft within unaided sight unless an applicable waiver authorizes otherwise. A maximum transmission specification does not create authority for a beyond-visual-line-of-sight flight.
How much can 46 GB of internal storage hold?
Avata 2 includes 46 GB of internal storage and supports microSD cards. DJI says the internal capacity can hold approximately 90 minutes of 1080p/60 footage. At the camera's maximum 130 Mbps video bitrate, a simple capacity calculation produces about 47 minutes before allowing for formatting, reserved space, file overhead, or bitrate variation.

DJI's current recommended-card list includes 64 GB, 128 GB, 256 GB, and 512 GB U3, A2, V30 microSDXC models from Kingston and Lexar. The useful purchasing specification is the speed class, not simply the capacity. A slow or counterfeit card can interrupt high-bitrate recording even when it has ample free space.
The camera uses the exFAT file system. Files can be transferred to a phone through DJI Fly QuickTransfer at a published maximum of 30 MB/s under favorable conditions. For a computer, DJI says the aircraft can be connected by USB without powering it on, or the microSD card can be removed and read directly.
Storage setup checklist:
- Choose a genuine U3/A2/V30 card from a reliable seller.
- Format the card in the aircraft before an important recording day.
- Confirm the intended storage location and remaining capacity in the goggles.
- Offload footage before the internal storage or card becomes nearly full.
- Keep at least one separate backup before formatting a card.
Positioning sensors are not obstacle avoidance
Avata 2 combines GPS, Galileo, and BeiDou satellite positioning with downward and backward vision. The downward system has a 0.3 to 10 m precise-hovering range and measures out to 20 m; the backward system measures from 0.5 to 20 m. DJI specifies patterned, diffusely reflective surfaces and adequate light above 15 lux for the vision system's intended operating environment.
Those sensors improve positioning in Normal and Sport modes, especially near the ground or indoors, but DJI explicitly states that Avata 2 does not support obstacle avoidance. There are no forward, upward, or side obstacle sensors that automatically plan a route around branches, walls, cables, or people.
Smart Return to Home, Low Battery RTH, and Failsafe RTH are available. They can help recover the aircraft after a low-battery condition or lost link, but the return path is not protected by omnidirectional obstacle detection. The pilot still needs a clear route and an appropriate RTH altitude.
At approximately 377 g, Avata 2 exceeds the 250 g threshold at which U.S. recreational flyers generally must register their drone. The aircraft's published C1 classification applies in the European Union; regional operating and radio rules should be checked separately.
Goggles and controller compatibility
Avata 2 cannot be flown without compatible goggles. It supports two hardware groups, and the goggles determine which motion controller or FPV Remote Controller can be paired. This matters when buying a drone-only replacement or trying to reuse equipment from an original Avata setup.

The motion controller provides the more accessible assisted experience and supports Easy ACRO maneuvers. Manual mode requires DJI FPV Remote Controller 2 or 3 in the matching hardware group. What the DJI Avata 2 specifications mean for buyers
Avata 2's specifications make sense when it is judged as an immersive FPV camera drone. The 1/1.3-inch sensor, 4K high-frame-rate modes, 10-bit D-Log M, electronic stabilization, and wide 155° view are well matched to close, fast flight. The 46 GB internal storage is genuinely useful, and O4 provides a strong low-latency video system when the flight remains within safe and legal limits.
The same sheet also identifies the tradeoffs. The 60.4 mph maximum requires Manual mode and a separate compatible controller. The 13 km figure is not a practical operating radius. The camera has only one mechanically stabilized axis, still photos are JPEG-only, flight time needs a reserve, and positioning sensors do not equal obstacle avoidance.
Choose Avata 2 for immersive movement, protected propellers, goggles-first control, and stabilized FPV video. Choose a conventional three-axis-gimbal camera drone if hovering photography, RAW stills, automated subject tracking, or obstacle sensing matters more than flying through the scene.
