A conventional camera drone asks the user to unfold the aircraft, connect a controller and phone, wait for positioning, launch, and then frame the shot. Neo can select an automatic mode on the aircraft, launch from a stationary open palm, record the movement, and return for a palm landing.

That difference matters more than it sounds. The best camera is often the one that gets used before the moment passes. Neo can be useful on a walk, campsite, family outing, or short stop where assembling a full camera-drone setup would feel disruptive.

The automatic modes solve a real filming problem

For palm or mobile control, DJI lists Follow, Expanse, Circle, Rocket, Spotlight, and Custom modes. Connecting through DJI Fly can add Helix or Boomerang choices. These modes let one person create movement around themselves without another pilot holding a controller.

Neo is not simply a tiny drone that happens to track. Its wide camera, protected propellers, light weight, and control system are organized around close, low-altitude subject filming. That purpose remains distinct even after the arrival of a successor.

Range depends on the controller

A phone connection and an O4 remote connection should not be described as the same system. DJI rates direct Wi-Fi phone operation at 50 m in an open, interference-free environment. With compatible remote or goggles equipment, O4 carries a much larger published communication rating of up to 10 km FCC or 6 km CE under ideal unobstructed conditions.

Neither number is a recommended flight distance. Neo's battery, return route, wind, terrain, interference, antenna orientation, local power limits, and visual-line-of-sight rules create much shorter practical boundaries.

Wind is a meaningful limitation

Neo's maximum published wind resistance is 8 m/s, Level 4. The aircraft can still be affected by gusts, turbulence around structures, and stronger wind above the launch point. Its wide camera and electronic stabilization may keep footage looking calmer than the aircraft's actual position, so the live image should not be the only wind indicator.

DJI lists 8 m/s as the Sport-mode horizontal maximum. A 16 m/s value appears for Manual mode, which requires the correct FPV control configuration and a different skill level. A base controller-free buyer should not treat 16 m/s as the normal tracking or phone-control speed.

The biggest weakness: no obstacle avoidance

Neo has downward visual positioning, not a system that scans the route and steers around hazards. It cannot reliably identify and avoid branches, cables, signs, walls, vehicles, or people while following a subject. Full-coverage propeller guards reduce exposed-propeller risk, but they do not prevent a collision or make every contact harmless.

This limitation matters most during the feature many buyers want: automatic tracking. A person may naturally move toward trees, under a structure, beside a fence, or around a corner while Neo concentrates on maintaining the shot. The route must be evaluated before launching, and the aircraft still needs active supervision.

  • Choose an open route with clear space above, beside, and behind the intended movement.
  • Check for thin branches, wires, poles, signs, roof edges, vehicles, animals, and other people.
  • Avoid reflective, textureless, or poorly lit surfaces that can reduce downward positioning performance.
