If your HOVERAir X1 PRO keeps losing the subject, land first, check the selected mode and landing behavior, then retry a simple walking shot in a clear, well-lit area. Check firmware before repeating the original route. These steps can identify a setting or scene problem; repeated loss in easy conditions, damage, or abnormal flight calls for support.
Subject tracking is the camera keeping a person in view while the aircraft follows the selected flight pattern. A frozen phone preview, a stationary camera in Hover mode, and an automatic landing can all look like tracking failure. The fix depends on which event actually happened.
1. Recover the aircraft before changing settings
Stop the shot and bring the aircraft down using controls you already know. Do not continue running or riding to see whether it catches up, or enter traffic, water, or a steep drop to reach it.
For lost visual tracking, HOVERAir's retrieval guidance describes connecting to the X1 app and activating manual control within 100 feet (30 meters). Treat that as the manufacturer's stated recovery range, not a guaranteed connection in every location. If control is available and the flight path is clear, guide the aircraft to a suitable landing spot. The Quick Start Guide documents manual landing and one-click return.
Do not assume losing the subject automatically triggers the same response as losing the controller connection. The safety manual describes a separate lost-connection setting, with Hover or Return to Home options under Manual Control's safety settings. Check that choice while grounded, before your next flight.
If the aircraft is already down but difficult to locate, the winter-sports guidance describes a recovery sound in HOVER Settings > Voice Settings > Find My HOVER. Menu wording can change. A location or sound aid is a way to assist retrieval, not a reason to attempt an unsafe recovery.
2. Identify what stopped: following, filming, or the preview
After landing, compare what you saw the aircraft do with the saved clip and any displayed message. Note the flight mode, when the event happened, and whether you had just stopped, turned, or passed behind something. Use these distinctions to choose the next check:
- The aircraft stayed in one place. Check whether Hover was selected. HOVERAir describes that mode as fixed-position shooting; Follow is the rear-following mode. A camera staying put in Hover does not establish a tracking fault.
- It approached to land when you stopped cycling. Check the selected landing method. The Cycling Mode instructions include remaining stationary for three seconds as a landing trigger. A deliberate return at that point may be the configured behavior.
- Only the phone picture froze. Check the downloaded recording before calling this subject loss. An intact clip with the person still framed points toward investigating the preview or connection first. It does not prove every flight system was healthy.
- The person disappeared from the saved frame while following should have continued. Record the moment and the surroundings. That is the event to investigate through the scene and walking checks below.
The mode distinction comes from HOVERAir's flight-mode guide; the stopping behavior is described in its Cycling Mode instructions. The comparison with the saved recording is a diagnostic step, not a claim that preview failures have one universal cause.
The Quick Start Guide distinguishes Bluetooth app connection from the aircraft Wi-Fi connection used to download footage. Follow the app's connection prompts while grounded. Do not change phone networking settings while trying to recover an aircraft in flight.
3. Check the aircraft and simplify the scene
Power down for inspection. Check the propeller guards, propellers, battery seating, motors, and gimbal for damage or obstruction. Keep the lower visual sensors clean and uncovered. Do not force the gimbal or dismantle the aircraft to chase a tracking problem.
HOVERAir's Safety Instructions distinguish visual positioning from subject following. With OmniTerrain off, avoid low light, water, snow, cliffs, and poorly textured surfaces. The lower sensors need usable ground detail for positioning. Seeing a person through the main camera does not establish that the aircraft can hold position reliably.
Choose a clear, permitted area with textured ground and even daylight for the next check. Plan a short straight route, with no tree trunk, wall, or passing person between you and the camera. This removes several variables at once to establish a simple starting condition; it does not prove which variable caused the earlier failure.
A green OmniTerrain indication is not proof that a hidden subject will remain tracked. Nor does tracking provide protection in every direction: the manufacturer explicitly warns that the aircraft lacks omnidirectional obstacle avoidance. Our HOVERAir X1 PRO review and obstacle-sensing limits explains the broader limitation.
4. Check firmware without treating an update as a cure
As checked on September 6, 2026, the newest X1 PRO/PROMAX entry on HOVERAir's release-notes page is v8.4.15, dated August 6, 2026. It lists improved Follow mode stability. The preceding v8.4.12 entry lists changes to target detection for different subject heights and tracking composition.
Record your installed aircraft and app versions. While grounded, follow the official app's update prompts and power requirements. If the app offers a different version from the public release history, preserve that detail for support rather than downloading an unofficial package. The public notes describe released changes; they do not establish what your particular aircraft has installed.
Also check names before following older tutorials: v8.2.7 renamed Side Track to Angle Track. The release history mixes several aircraft and accessory families, so read the X1 PRO/PROMAX entries specifically. A feature listed for another device is not evidence that it applies here.
After an update, recheck the selected mode, flight parameters, and landing method. Keep the first flight simple so any change in behavior is easy to describe.
5. Use a walking check before retrying speed or turns
For an undamaged aircraft with no unresolved warning, start with ordinary Follow and a short, straight walking shot in the clear area you selected. The purpose is to learn whether the failure also occurs without the original route's speed, bends, and obstructions.
- Confirm the setup. Verify Follow on the aircraft or app, check the displayed parameters, and make sure the intended person is framed before moving away.
- Walk a straight line. Keep the aircraft in sight and avoid sudden direction changes. End the short shot using the landing method you selected.
- Review the result. Did the aircraft retain the same person? Did the frame lose them before or after a turn, obstruction, or warning? Compare the clip with your notes.
- Change one factor. Only after a clean result, try a gentle turn in similarly open space. Keep the mode and other settings unchanged. Do not progress to a faster or more confined route if this check fails.
The sequence helps isolate when the failure occurs; it does not certify the aircraft as reliable. One successful clip does not establish reliability on a wooded trail. A failure during the simple check is useful information for support and a reason to stop escalating the flight.
If ordinary walking works but a cycling route does not, review the actual aircraft path as well as the person's path. In Cycling Mode, HOVERAir describes Open Areas as optimizing its route for efficiency and Narrow Routes as reproducing the cyclist's movement. The environment choice is available with the follow position set to Back. That difference matters at a bend: the aircraft may not take the same line you expected.
Do not use Narrow Routes as permission to fly through branches or around blind corners. Check that the aircraft's whole corridor is clear, including overhead. If the location cannot provide that space and visibility, change the shot or location.
6. Stop repeated failures and give support a useful record
Land immediately for a low-battery or strong-wind warning. Stop using the aircraft after a serious impact, water immersion, or abnormal flight. Those are safety-manual stop conditions, not invitations to keep trying different tracking modes.
If subject loss repeats during the simple walking check, contact the HOVERAir X1 PRO/PROMAX support team. Preserve the original footage and collect the following before making changes that could erase useful information:
- The exact aircraft model, installed firmware, app version, and phone model.
- The flight mode, distance and height settings, landing choice, and any error text.
- The clip and approximate moment of failure, with a short description of light, ground, movement, and obstructions.
- Whether the same failure occurred during the clear-area walking check, and whether there was any earlier impact or water exposure.
Ask support which device logs they need and follow their current collection instructions. Do not erase footage or factory-reset the aircraft merely to make the problem disappear temporarily.
The useful fix is the one that matches the symptom: correct a mistaken mode, understand a landing trigger, simplify an unsuitable shot, or install an applicable official update. When a clear, simple shot still fails, stop experimenting and preserve the evidence for diagnosis.
