What the DJI Controller Names Mean

RC-N1, RC-N2, and RC-N3 use a phone

The RC-N family has no built-in display. A mobile device runs DJI Fly and shows the camera feed. The controllers look similar, but their internal radio hardware and supported aircraft lists differ. RC-N1 serves drones such as Mini 4K, Mini 3 Pro, Air 2S, and the Mavic 3 series. RC-N2 and RC-N3 serve the newer Air 3, Mini 4 Pro, Flip, Neo, and related generation.

RC-N2 and RC-N3 currently support many of the same aircraft, but that does not make the model names meaningless. The included cables, hardware revision, original bundle, firmware path, and future support can differ. Buy the model DJI lists, not the one that merely looks close enough.

DJI RC and DJI RC 2 have built-in screens

DJI RC belongs with the Mini 3, Mini 3 Pro, Air 2S, and Mavic 3 generation. DJI RC 2 belongs with the newer Mini 4 Pro, Mini 5 Pro, Air 3, Air 3S, Flip, Neo, Neo 2, and Mavic 4 Pro group. Neither controller supports third-party app installation, according to DJI.

The number “2” is decisive. A listing that says only “DJI screen controller” is too vague for a used purchase. Ask the seller to show the About screen or the model label.

DJI RC Pro and RC Pro 2 are separate generations

DJI RC Pro supports the Mavic 3 family, Air 2S, and—with appropriate firmware—Mini 3 Pro. DJI RC Pro 2 is the newer professional controller for Mavic 4 Pro, Mini 5 Pro, Air 3S, Air 3, and Mini 4 Pro. The original RC Pro can run third-party apps; that fact does not expand its aircraft compatibility.

Why Matching OcuSync or O4 Is Not Enough

Transmission generation is a necessary compatibility clue, not a universal pairing rule. A controller and aircraft need compatible radio hardware, an approved DJI pairing, and firmware that recognizes the selected aircraft. Two products can both advertise O4 and still have different support lists.

For example, RC-N2 and RC-N3 can support several of the same O4 aircraft after the correct firmware is installed. DJI RC 2 also supports O4 aircraft, but it is not interchangeable with every O4 controller or every goggles-based device. At the other end, DJI RC can switch among the corresponding transmission systems used by its supported O2- and O3-family aircraft. The official aircraft list remains more reliable than a rule based on protocol name alone.

  • Same transmission family: may be required, but does not guarantee binding.
  • Same physical shell: says almost nothing about internal compatibility.

FPV and Motion Controllers Require the Whole Device Chain

Goggles-based DJI flying is not a simple controller-to-aircraft pairing. The aircraft, goggles, controller, and firmware must all belong to an approved combination. A remote that supports the aircraft through one goggles generation may not work through another.

DJI states that DJI Avata 2 cannot be flown without compatible goggles. Neo and Neo 2 are different because they also offer non-goggles control modes. Neo supports RC-N2, RC-N3, and DJI RC 2 for ordinary stick flying, while its immersive options add compatible goggles and an FPV or motion controller.

How to Verify a DJI Controller Before Buying

A compatibility list prevents most mistakes, but a used controller can still fail to link because of old firmware, account binding, a damaged port, or an inaccurately labeled marketplace listing. Use this process before paying:

  1. Identify the exact aircraft. “Mini 3” and “Mini 3 Pro” are different products. “Mavic 3 series” should be narrowed to the actual model.
  2. Identify the exact controller. Check the label or Settings/About screen. Do not accept “DJI RC” as a generic name for every screen-equipped remote.
  3. Check DJI’s current compatibility page. Use the aircraft page and controller page, paying attention to documentation updated after the product launch.
  4. Update DJI Fly, the aircraft, and the controller. DJI’s RC-N linking instructions may load the firmware associated with the aircraft selected in Connection Guide.
  5. Confirm every required device. An Avata or motion-control setup may also need compatible goggles; Neo 2 needs its Digital Transceiver.

  7. Check account status. Ask the seller to remove or unbind equipment from their DJI account where applicable.

Do not buy by protocol alone: a marketplace description that says “O4 compatible” is incomplete. Require the full controller model and a DJI-supported aircraft pairing.

Controller Compatibility Does Not Determine Where You Can Fly
